What Makes A Wedding Photographer A Professional?

WedFog photographer Howard Kier of Magical Moments photography in Chicago shares some valuable information for those brides to be in search of a professional wedding photographer.
Plumbers, Doctors, Electricians and many other professions are licensed. Unfortunately, professional photographers are not. Anybody can walk into the store, buy a professional looking camera and say they are a professional photographer. Just as there are full-time photographers who pretend to be professional photographers there are also part-time photographers who are truly professional photographers. It is up to you, the consumer, to make sure the photographer you hire for your special day is in fact really a professional photographer and not just pretending to be one. That great price you pay up front could cause you a lot of heartache after your wedding.

Wedding Planning on a Budget

WedFog member and wedding photographer Howard Kier shares some down and dirty. Tried and true tips for those of you planning your wedding on a budget.
So what can you do? The key is to minimize the amount of time you'll need the photographer. One way to do this is reduce the amount of time between the ceremony and the reception. Then reduce the cocktail hour to thirty minutes. Actually, if you can have your ceremony and reception in the same location you can really reduce the down time.
Read more of Howard's tips in his recently posted WedFog article "Planning on a Budget".

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, Who's the Most Important Vendor of Them All!

The wedding photographer of course (this is a site run by wedding photographers afterall) but for some reasons that might not be apparent to you having never hired a wedding photographer before.
"Only your wedding photographer will be focused on you through all of it. To record the day’s events, we have to always be there…around…watching. Not in your face, in the background. Experience tells us when to expect things to happen, when to nudge them along and when to stay out of the way. We might take photos of your flowers, your table plans, your decorations, but we will always know where you are and when. Right up until it’s time to leave."
It's so true that many times your wedding photographer will be your best friend for the day. In his article Steve has a firm grasp on why this is. Read More!

Wedding Photography in Washington D.C.

Robyn Witschey writes for WedFog...
Congratulations -- you’ve made a wise decision to hold your wedding festivities in the National Capital area. Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its monuments and other landmarks provide iconic, instantly - recognizable backdrops that will make your wedding photographs even more special and unique. In addition, Washington’s gardens, monumental architecture and accessible urban locales offer unlimited settings for photography. The surrounding Virginia and Maryland suburbs also offer easy access to historic towns and peaceful parkland.
In her article she goes on to give 8 useful tips for taking your wedding photos in our nations capital.
You don’t want to be surprised. Work with your photographer to verify that wedding photography is permitted, the guidelines for photography and the cost. Many public gardens limit the number and duration of wedding photography sessions per day. Quite frequently large tents are erected on The National Mall and Capitol grounds during the summer months. The tents block entire buildings and interrupt the vistas. The National Arboretum requires registration at least two weeks in advance. And who wants to navigate the crowds around the Tidal Basin during the Cherry Blossom Festival (let alone someone wearing a wedding dress)?

Wedding Photography on North Carolina's Crystal Coast

North Carolina's Crystal Coast offers wedding guests a multitude of activities...
There are a number of activities to entertain guests and members of the wedding party before and after the wedding. The Crystal Coast is known worldwide for both its off-shore and inshore saltwater fishing. There are many charter operations in the area. There are also several nice golf courses that are open to the public. Of course, being a resort community, boutique shopping opportunities abound. There are also a number of museums and educational attractions such as the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Fort Macon State Park, The History Place, and the NC State Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.
Bob Decker goes on to say in his WedFog wedding planning article titled "North Carolina Crystal Coast: Close Enough to Drive but Far Enough to Escape" that having a wedding coordinator is almost indispensable.

Planning a New Orleans Wedding

Michael Caswell a Louisiana local has provided WedFog with helpful guide for planning a New Orleans wedding. Michael says this about photography locations,
There are many options to choose from, depending on your preference and personality, and your photographer can certainly help you with this decision. For an elegant, traditional bridal portrait, the front steps of the New Orleans Museum of Art is a very popular location. For a fun, natural-environment engagement portrait, City Park or Audubon Park are good choices. For a grittier, edgier bridal or engagement portrait, nothing beats simply roaming the French Quarter, seeking out interesting doorways and old weathered walls, in front of which the immaculate and beautiful bride creates a striking visual contrast. These sessions are always spontaneous, fun, and unpredictable.

Planning A San Diego Beach Wedding

Photographer Julie Edwards has submitted a new article to WedFog entitled "Planning a San Diego Beach Wedding" and it's full of great tips like this one.
Be sure to check a tide calendar and sunset time before planning your beach wedding. For your San Diego beach wedding photos to look the absolute best, you want to plan to be on the beach about an hour and a half before sunset until just about dark. High noon on the beach is not the most comfortable light for you or your guests, nor the most flattering for photos.

Towers of Flowers

Reach for the sky is probably the best advice I've seen for wedding centerpieces and it comes from Lancaster Online. Why is taller better?
"...tall arrangements add a very dramatic look to the tables and the entire reception hall, yet guests can see each other and converse without interference."
Taller and more slender arrangements will also allow your photographer to better shoot around them as well when capturing candid photos of your guests at the reception. Be sure to click on over and read the rest of the article. it's full of excellent tips for planning the look of your wedding reception.

Virginia Hunt Country Weddings - Possibly the Perfect Destination

If you're planning a wedding near the Maryland Virginia border you'll want to read this article. Don & Ines Harper operate The Edge Photography Studio out of historic Leesburg, Virginia and Don tells WedFog
When people talk about a destination wedding at our nation’s capital they think about the famous monuments on the mall, elegant hotels, and grand venues such as the National Building Museum. They think about the spring cherry blossoms.

Local wedding photographers know and treasure a nearby region, the Virginia Hunt Country. This historic area preserves views and venues dating to the nation’s colonial period. Everything from small B&B’s, Colonial Estates and a growing number of vineyards to the new West Belmont Ballroom in Leesburg Virginia.
